Supported Internships

Supported internships are programmes that help young people with SEND move from education to employment.

Programmes have their own criteria and entry requirements but share many of the same features.

Supported Internships are carried out for the most part in the work place, young people are helped to find a Supported Internship employer and will be matched to a job that suits them.

Some internships are based with a specific employer with all training being carried out onsite.

To be eligible to undertake a supported internship you need to be:

  • Aged 16 to 24 years
  • Have an EHCP

Providers may also have their own entry criteria.

You will need to apply to the supported internship provider directly.  Some programmes are very popular so be sure to check application deadlines.

See a full list of local Supported Internships lower down the page.  Each programme has a supporting college, employment partner and employer.

Suggested process for getting place on a supported internship
  • Attend Open Days - often programmes have their own open days or evenings or attend a Supported Internship event, often held in November and January for the following September.
  • Get, complete and return application form to the college or supported Employment Partner
  • Advise PfA Case officer of your plan
  • Attend internship interview
  • Advise PfA Case officer of result
  • If successful enrol and start

Some Supported Internships run outside of academic years.

If you are not sure about your options or if a supported internship is for you, get some careers advice first.
