What is your current job and what does your role involve?
I am currently working at McDonald’s since February 2020, my role as a Crew Member involves preparing food, serving on the till or
helping out in the dining area. The in-house training I received at McDonald’s is of a very high standard, learning customer service, food preparation, cleanliness and hygiene.
What training and education did you do to get to where you are today?
I went to Hampton Junior School and then on to Orleans Secondary School, when I left primary school I was 4 years behind in my studies due to Dyslexia and other learning difficulties. But with the help from Orleans School I was able to catch up on my education.
After leaving school I went to Green Corridor (they do vocational courses in Horticulture and Catering) but at that time it was not for me.
Are you still working towards any qualifications?
At McDonald’s you work towards their STAR qualifications working in all areas from customer service to food hygiene. All training is online which I can do at home or at work. In a recent exam I got 99%.
What support did you get to help you achieve your goals? This could be from school, support workers, careers support, AfC support etc..
Carol (AfC’s Vocational Pathways Coordinator) and Orleans School are very supportive, to this day they are still in contact with me checking in to see how I am getting on and if I need any further support.
How has your employer supported you?
My manager at McDonald’s has been really supportive even during lockdown when I wasn’t working, like most of the country. They phoned me weekly and also paid me even though I only started in February. I was glad to return to work in June. I do a 40 hour week, working from 4pm to midnight.
