Social Communication Intensive Package (SCIP)

The Service

A SCIP is an inclusive and preventative package of support that is additional to other forms of support that schools make available to their children with Special Educational Needs (SEN): 

  •  Inclusion:  so that children may have their needs met at their local school.
  •  Prevention: so that children’s needs are supported early and in some cases resolved via strategies/interventions put in place

Outreach advice/support delivered by a team of:

  •          Specialist Speech and Language Therapists
  •          Specialist/Advisory Teachers and Higher Level Teaching Assistants
  •          Teaching Assistant (TA) appointed to the child and based in school   

         (Allocation of hours varies according to budget/need but usually 12.5, 10 or 5 hours)

Consists of:

  • TA support in class to implement strategies/adapt the environment to make learning accessible.
  •  Small group/1-1 or paired work sessions as recommended.

Teaching Assistants/teachers are given specialist training each term and ongoing support from an attached outreach professional.

The Children

In Key Stage One (from Reception Year to Year 2) receiving SEN support (without an EHCP)

Have difficulties with the following:

  • Social communication – verbal and non verbal skills
  • Social interaction
  • Thinking flexibly
  • Possible sensory needs

Children will be referred to a yearly meeting, based on assessment, evidence and involvement from external agencies, e.g. Speech and Language Therapists, specialist staff (Early Years Inclusion Advisors/Portage) or an Educational Psychologist, with parental consent.

Working with Parents/Carers
  • Home/school diaries are set up by school
  • End of term review meetings are held with the SENCo, the outreach professional providing advice, teacher, Teaching Assistant and the parents/carers. 
Duration
  • The package is reviewed termly and can be offered for up to 6 terms.
  • If children make good progress, additional hours may be reduced. This will be based on observations, feedback and progress and discussed as part of the termly review if appropriate.
  • If children are identified as needing ongoing additional support the outreach professional will encourage and support the school in making an EHCP needs assessment request. This can happen during the duration of the SCIP so support is continuous/not interrupted.
