Description of activity

The Elizabeth Newson Centre is a facility for the families of children with any developmental communication disorder, and is designed to help parents obtain a specialist diagnostic assessment of their child as early as possible, so as to move towards focused intervention without delay. Children are seen across the age range, but we may need to adapt procedures for those of secondary age.

The Centre is able to provide comprehensive assessments across the full range of communication disorders and has particular clinical and research experience in very early intervention, Pathological Demand Avoidance syndrome and counselling approaches for children and young people with Asperger’s syndrome.

Statement from Achieving for Children
"AfC follow the guidelines in the DSM-V or ICD-10 manuals of diagnostic criteria currently used in the UK. These guidelines do not recognise PDA as a condition and therefore diagnostic services such as CAMHS would not make a separate diagnosis of PDA and do not fund independent assessments. However we recognise that some parents and carers may have an interest in understanding more about this subject. We have therefore included information on PDA on this website to meet this need but for reference only".
