Bit of background about the Book Club
Aimed at people aged 18 +, and with speech or visual impairment no impediment, the group is led by two experienced volunteers, who currently support a similar group in Epsom library. Jo is a Clinical Psychologist, who uses books therapeutically in her work, and Marina has used music and art while working with adults with learning difficulties over the last 15 years.
The books used in the group will be from the Books Beyond Words series.
This series of books tell stories in pictures to help people with learning disabilities and communication difficulties explore and understand their own experiences. They help people learn about life and how to cope with its bigger challenges such as love and relationships, health, death and crime.
As there are no words the story is told by the group members looking at the pictures and describing and discussing what they see. So unlike other book clubs, no pre reading is required. It all happens in the club. The aim is to empower the members in the safe environment of the library.
The group takes place at Kingston Library on a monthly basis on a Friday morning 11am-12. There is a break in August but then it starts again in September
