Free activities camps for young people with serious health challenges
DM Thomas Foundation for Young People has awarded a grant of £11,758 to provide free residential activities camps with Over The Wall for young people who are experiencing serious health challenges.
Over The Wall provides activity camps, free of charge for children and young people living with serious health challenges. Each camp is designed to be a fun, memorable and empowering experience where young people are able to develop their confidence, self-esteem, coping strategies and relationships.
DM Thomas Foundation for Young People is committed to improving the lives of sick, disabled and disadvantaged young children. By providing specialist equipment and facilities, important training and support, and vital care, the Foundation is improving the health and education of young people so that they are able to achieve their full potential.
The Foundation joined campers and staff at the Scotland Health Challenge Camp 2018 in Perthshire to present the grant to Over The Wall. The grant will fund equipment for four Health Challenge Camps taking place in 2019. Young people aged 8-17 who are experiencing serious health challenges will be able to take part in various activities, such as archery, drama, abseiling and coding, and build new friendships, whilst receiving full support from camp the medical team. By trying new activities and achieving their goals, campers are able to develop their confidence and self-esteem.
Simon Sheehan, Director of DM Thomas Foundation of Young People said, “It’s fantastic to see the young campers’ confidence grow as they try new activities and achieve their goals. As a Foundation we are committed to helping young people to reach their full potential and we are delighted to be providing equipment at four Health Challenge Camps so more young are able to develop their self-esteem.”
Kevin Mathieson, Over the Wall CEO said, “We’re absolutely delighted that DM Thomas Foundation for Young People has chosen to support our work and to fund equipment for our Health Challenge camps. Every year, Over The Wall transforms the lives of hundreds of children and young people who find themselves isolated and lacking in self-esteem and confidence because of serious illness.
