Educational Psychology Offer - Post Neurodevelopmental Assessment Support

This is a pilot scheme being offered to 20 families in Richmond in the first instance. The offer is to families whose children have had a neurodevelopmental/CAMHS assessment, between November 2016 and March 2017through the neurodevelopmental assessment team based at Springfield Hospital. 

We would like to provide you with the opportunity to discuss the findings with a local Educational Psychologist from Achieving for Children.

Educational psychologists (EPs) help children or young people who are experiencing problems that hinder their successful learning progress and emotional well-being in school and the wider community. As EPs work in a range of community settings, as well as within all primary and secondary schools in Richmond, they are well placed to think collaboratively with you about ‘next steps’. This will most likely take place within your child’s school setting to enable a joined-up discussion with teachers and support staff about future interventions and support, and will last for approximately an hour and a half.

The Achieving for Children Educational Psychology service exists to provide every child in Kingston and Richmond with the opportunity to succeed as effective learners and to become confident individuals. Therefore, if you feel that a meeting with an EP would be helpful, this could involve:

  • Reflecting on your journey through neurodevelopmental assessment, and the impact on your family (both emotionally and practically);
  • Thinking about the immediate support needs for your child and your family;
  • Further discussion of your child’s profile of need arising from the assessment – what this means and what might usefully happen next;
  • Exploration of your child’s strengths and how to build on these, as well as consideration of additional educational or therapeutic support needs and what this might look like;
  • Identifying, if necessary, appropriate interventions for challenging behaviour;
  • Involvement, if you would like, of your child’s school staff (e.g. class teacher, SENCO, learning support assistant) in the discussion, alongside ‘signposting’ toward further support;
  • Planning for the future;
  • Liaison with your child’s school or other community setting as appropriate.
