We all have mental health. It’s about how we feel and think about life; about our relationships; about how we learn and develop as we grow up. Just like our physical health, it can be good and bad. 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in their life. This includes young people. When we struggle with our mental health it can affect our ability to do every day things like sleep and eat; go to school, college or work and it can make it hard for us to enjoy the things we used to- like seeing our friends or doing hobbies. When we experience things like this, it’s really important we get help that meets our needs, feel relevant to us, and is easy to access. To make sure this happens, it is important that young people and their families have a say in how services are designed and delivered.
The NHS England are working with YoungMinds, a charity campaigning for better mental health for children and young people, to find out young people’s views about how they are and how they would like to be involved in mental health services. The views they gather from young people will be used to help improve:
How young people are included in decision making about their own care and treatment when accessing mental health services.
How services work with young people to ensure they have a say in how services are designed and delivered.
How relevant and accessible mental health services are for children and young people.
It’s really important that young people speak out about these issues so that they can inform the direction of this exiting programme. If you are aged up to 25 you can share your views in this short survey that is being run by YoungMinds. It will take 15-20 minutes and it’s for everyone- you don’t need to have used a mental health service before and it’s important young people of all different genders; ethnicities; sexual orientations; backgrounds and with all different experiences like being in care; or being a young carer take part so that your needs are listened to as well.
